When I boot up, dr.web says "Update required." But does not update: "Error. Please check your internet connection." This happens every time. No exceptions. I live in a remote area. I think the server times out waiting for the response through the satellite connection.

This does not happen when I make it back to civilization. Any ideas? Is there anything I can do?

We need a file "dwupdater.log" to analyze and resolve your problem. Probably you're right and the problem is timeout. Anyway, try to upload your dwupdater.log here (or on any filesharing service) to make the situation clear.

I cannot find the file. Any thoughts on where I should look.

c:\Users\All Users\Doctor Web\Logs\dwupdater.log

Or Tools - Support - Report for technical support from Dr.Web's Agent menu.

I'm getting this exact same error except I'm on Mac El Capitan and so I don't have that log file or that path. How do I solve the problem?

Not exactly the same...

You should better ask tech support. https://support.drweb.ru/support_wizard/

Or start a new topic in here https://forum.drweb.com/index.php?showforum=51

But support is better, of course.
